Multi-Grain Sathumavu is a complete nutritious loaded health mix. We used to have sathumavu drink in our childhood; even now my mom makes this on saturday’s, sometimes as morning drink. The mix is a rich source of protein, iron, fiber, carbohydrate and calcium. This health mix porridge is simply delicious and flavorful. Here is the recipe:
Ingredients for sathumavu/health mix flour
- Whole wheat – 1 cup
- Navadhanyam – 1 cup
- Pottukadalai/split dalia – 1/4 cup
- Whole ragi/fingermillet – 1/4 cup (if available)
- Whole kambu/pearlmillet – 1/4 cup(if available)
- Makkacholam/dried corn – 100 gm
- Barely – 100 gm
- Badam/pista/sunflowerseeds – 100 gm
- Dry ginger/sukku – 20 gm
- Cardamom/elaichi – 6-8 pods
Procedure
- Dry roast each item individually other than cardamom, until it starts spluttering or until you get a nice aroma
- Grind well using a small mixie jar (if you are nearby any flour mill, then you can very well grind the mix in a mill)
- Store the grind flour it in an air tighter container; you can use this flour for 1-2 months
Ingredients for sathumavu/health mix Porridge
- sathumavu/Health mix – 1.5 tblsp
- Water/milk – 1/2 cup
- Jaggery – 2 tsp
- Ghee – 1 tsp
Making Direction
- Take 1.5 tblsp of sathumavu/health mix
- Dissolve 2 tsp of jaggery in half a cup of water/milk, along with a tsp of ghee
- Mix the health mix flour with the dissolved jaggery water/milk
- Stir well without any lumps then keep the mix in a low flame for few mins, until it reaches smooth and creamy consistency.
- It is ready to be served now; you can feed your baby when the porridge is warm
- You can start this meal with a little thin consistency and gradually increases your feeding level and consistency
NOTE
- You can start this multigrain sathumavu/health mix for your baby, around 11-12 months
- Strain the dissolved jaggery mix, if needed
- This porridge is a heavy and filling food, so use GHEE at your own discretion
- It is always best to prepare baby food fresh and feed your baby, than preparing and storing it
- I usually prepare the mix with odd number of ingredients – 11 or 9 or 7 grains, based on what is available at home. I really dont know a reason, but I have seen my mom and grand mother follow this odd number of ingredients for any home made baby food or medicine that they make and i just follow it 🙂
