Ragi Kanji / Finger Millet Porridge
Ragi porridge can be made either using the whole ragi millet and getting its milk (ragi paal kanji) or by making porridge using ragi powder. I have listed steps for the latter method using homemade ragi powder. Ragi is very rich in fiber and will aid in your child’s growth.
Ingredients
- Ragi flour – 2 tblsp
- Water – 1/2 cup
- Jaggery – 1 tblsp / as per the taste
- Salt – a pinch
- Ghee – 1 tsp
Procedure
- Take 2 tblsp of ragi flour; take a tblsp of jaggery and dissolve it in water
- Now mix the ragi flour with the jaggery water along with a tsp of ghee and add a pinch of salt
- Stir well without any lumps, then keep it in a low flame for few mins, until it reaches smooth and creamy consistency.
- It is ready to be served now.
Serving suggestion
- Once your baby is ok with the initial rice based solid food, start this ragi meal with a little thin consistency
- Gradually increase your feeding level and consistency
- Feed your baby when the porridge is warm
Note
- Food like ragi/wheat are advised to be fed after your baby reaches 6 months; these ingredients usually take more time to digest for the baby as the digestive track is still growing.
- Before starting with ragi/wheat food, it will be good to have your baby get used to rice based food.
- For any baby food, always prepare fresh and feed your baby; as much possible, do not store food and feed the baby.
