Red rice Black Urad dhal IDLI

Ingredients:

  • Red rice/ matta rice – 2 cups
  • Black whole urad dhal – ½ cup (heaped)
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Gingelly oil – ½ tsp (to grease idli plates)

Procedure:

  • Wash and soak the red rice and black whole urad dhal -fenugreek seeds separately for about 6 hours(ref pic)

  • Grind the urad dhal and fenugreek seeds first (do not pour required amount of water all at once, drizzle the water whenever it needs)
  • It takes minimum of 30-40 mins to grind; since we are grinding this black urad dhal in grinder, the skin of the urad dhal will not grind finely (ref pic)

  • Scoop out the grounded dhal mixture and add the soaked red rice and grind it coarsely (ref pic) it will take minimum of 15-20 mins

  • In a wide mixing bowl, Mix both the batter together with required amount of salt and allow it to ferment at least for about 8 hours (ref pic)

  • Take some of batter into another bowl and add required amount of water and mix well (ref pic)

  • Grease the idli plates with few drops of gingelly oil and fill the batter into each mold (ref pic)

  • Steam it for about 8-10 mins (or) insert a toothpick into the center of the idli and comes out clean

  • The soft, fluffy and healthy “RED RICE-BLACK URAD DHAL IDLIs” are ready to serve

  • Serve hot with some kara chutney
