Vazhaithandu Poriyal

//plantain stem//

Ingredients:

  • Vazhaithandu –2 cups (finely chopped)
  • Onion – 1 no medium (finely chopped)
  • Moong dhal – ½ cup (parboiled)
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Grated coconut – ¼ cup
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – few
  • Green chili – 2-3 nos
  • Salt – to taste

Tempering:

  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  • Coconut oil – 2 tblsp

Procedure:

  • Trim the outer layer and cut into round shapes in between you can see some fiber threads and collect it in one finger and pull it off, repeat the process for the entire stem and chop it finely and put them into curd water (adding tblsp of curd into 5 cups of water- to avoid browning)
  • Meanwhile parboil the moon dhal and drain out the excess water and keep aside.
  • In a pan, heat some coconut oil. Add mustard and cumin seeds, allow it to splutter. Now add chopped onion and saute for a while
  • Add the finely chopped Vazhaithandu (drain out the water) and add turmeric powder and salt to taste.
  • Cover it with a lid. Cook under medium flame for about 2-3 mins.
  • Meanwhile grind the grated coconut, green chili, cumin seeds and curry leaves finely without adding water and sprinkle the grounded mixture into the cooked Vazhaithandu along with parboiled moong dhal and turn off the flame.
  • Tasty, healthy and delicious “PLANTAIN STEM/ VAZHAITHANDU Poriyal” is ready to serve.

NOTE/TIP:

  • Cut the stem 5 mins prior to cooking, unless it will change the color
  • Adding moong dhal will gives more flavor and texture.
