Instant Pacha payir/ green moong dhal Kuzhambu
Ingredients:
- Pacha payir/ whole green moong dhal – ½ cup
- Small onion – 5 nos
- Garlic – 4-5 cloves (crushed)
- Tomato – 1 (medium)
- Mixed veggies (drumsticks, carrot, indian gooseberry) – 1 cup
- Kuzhambu podi – 1.5 tblsp (or)
- Plain red chili powder – ½ tblsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tblsp
- Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- Puli karasal/ Tamarind puree – ¼ cup
- Curry leaves – few
- Salt – to taste
- Water – as req
- Jaggery – 1 tsp
- Asafetida – ½ tsp
Coconut Masala (optional)
- Grated coconut – 2 tblsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Tempering:
- Gingelly oil – 2 tblsp
- Fenugreek – ½ tsp
Procedure:
- Dry roast the green moong until nice aroma comes and pressure cooks it for about 3 whistles along with the mixed veggies.
- Peel and slice the small onions and crush the garlic lightly and keep aside
- In a heavy bottomed sauce pan, heat some gingelly oil. Add fenugreek seeds, allow it to splutter
- Now add the sliced onions and garlic along with some curry leaves. Saute for a while and add the chopped tomatoes too. Add some salt and cook it for a min.
- Add the kuzhambu podi and saute it for a min. Time to add the puli karasal and add required amount of water to the kuzhambu and bring it boil.
- Between grind the coconut-cumin seed mixture into a fine paste.
- Now add the boiled green moong with vegetables along with coconut paste into the kuzhambu mixture and cover it with a lid to cook furthermore for about 5-8 mins or so.
- Finally check the salt and add the jaggery and asafetida. Now turn off the flame.
- The tasty and delicious “Instant Pacha Payir Kuzhambu” is ready to serve.
NOTE/TIP:
- Do not add more coconut paste, the kuzhambu taste might vary.
- You can use black eyed beans/ red beans/ thatta payir instead of pacha payir.
